Journey through the ice age formed Gap of Dunloe to Kenmare. Twin towns of Caherdaniel and Cahirsiveen intersect at Waterville for picturesque points around the Ring of Kerry. For the most stunning mountain and coastal scenery go round Ardagh Peninsula on this 110-mile route. 

Killarney National Park – Muckross Estate was donated to the Irish Free State in 1932, making it the first national park in Ireland. The mild Killarney climate makes for an impressive variety of native oak and yew woods to evergreens and lichens. Marked as a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO with 26,000 acres of mountains, lakes, forests and waterfalls this is the only place to find native Irish red deer.

Muckrose House – Tour the elegantly furnished rooms and informal garden at a 19th-century Elizabethan-style manor. Home of the Herbert family for over two centuries. The current home was built by William Burn, the well-known Scottish architect who completed it in 1843. During the 1850s, the Herberts undertook extensive garden works to prepare for Queen Victoria’s visit in 1861.

McGillycuddy Reeks – The highest mountain range in Ireland rises to a height of over 1,000 metres. Hike ten hours for views back towards Killarney, west into the Iveragh and Beara Peninsula. Conquer a total of 11 peaks with a 6,000ft ascent, one of the most exciting hikes in Ireland.  (*This walk is only advised for the experienced mountaineer as there is scrambling across exposed rock faces and it takes in knife edged ridges.)
