Discover Sandankyo
Welcome to Sandankyo Gorge, a breathtaking natural wonder nestled along the Shibaki River in northwestern Akiota. This 16-kilometer gorge is a part of the Nishi-Chugoku Sanchi Quasi-National Park and has been designated a Special Place of Scenic Beauty. It is the only gorge in western Japan with this esteemed recognition.
Experience the untouched beauty of Sandankyo Gorge while respecting its commitment to nature conservation. The gorge offers a range of walking courses, from easy strolls to challenging all-day treks. The paths are thoughtfully designed so as not to disrupt the ecosystem, allowing you to enjoy the rushing waters and stunning ravines up close.
For a unique perspective, take a boat ride to Kurobuchi Pool and Sarutobi Rock. Admire the colossal cliffs and untouched forests from the serene waters, immersing yourself in the unspoiled surroundings.
As you explore the trails, you’ll encounter a diverse forest of ancient conifers and evergreen trees. Sandankyo Gorge boasts an impressive array of moss, with about one-sixth of Japan’s 1,800 moss varieties found here. The tall cliffs and cascading waterfalls create a landscape reminiscent of traditional Chinese landscape paintings, known as shan shui, which led to greater conservation of the gorge.
No matter the season, Sandankyo Gorge offers abundant plant life. The lush greenery of summer and the vibrant hues of autumn paint a picturesque backdrop for your adventure. Immerse yourself in nature and engage all your senses—listen to the rushing white water, smell the refreshing forest scent, feel the cool water and fallen leaves, taste the unpolluted air, and, of course, behold the awe-inspiring beauty.
Only a 75-minute bus ride from Hiroshima, Sandankyo Gorge is a true haven for nature enthusiasts. Discover the magic of this place that celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2017. Once a hidden gem mentioned in a historical book, it was renowned photographer Kuma Nanpo who first recognized its charm and worked to preserve it.
Begin your journey at the Sandankyo Front Gate, where the most popular trail starts. The three-kilometer trek to Kurobuchi Pool is perfect for beginners and day-trippers. Cross the red bridge over Nagabuchi Pool, explore Shimaidaki Falls and Tatsunokuchi Torrent, and marvel at Akadaki Falls with its red-algae-covered rocks. Enjoy the elevated path along Meotobuchi Pool and Ishidoi Shallows before reaching the tranquil Kurobuchi Pool, where you can relax and soak in the awe-inspiring views.
To explore further, visit Nidandaki Falls and Sandandaki Falls. Nidandaki Falls can be reached on foot or by a boat ride through the narrow passageway of Sarutobi Rock. Witness the hidden beauty of the waterfall emerging from the passageway, hear its mighty roar, and feel its spray. Sandandaki Falls, with its three tiers and turquoise pool, is another must-see sight along the trail.
Sandankyo Gorge is a testament to the dedication of its local residents and Kuma Nanpo’s vision. Through their efforts, this natural treasure has been preserved and promoted as a tourist destination while retaining its pristine allure.
