Sligo

Neolithic marvels and inspiring beauty

An inspiration for Irish poetry, Sligo is a place to seek thrills in the salty surf or trek through ancient heritage trails.

Discover Sligo

Positioned along the west coast of Ireland, Sligo is a small county that punches well above its weight in terms of literary heritage and natural beauty. Known as ‘The Land of Heart’s Desire’, Sligo was home to poet and Nobel Laureate, W.B. Yeats, and many of his poems, including ‘The Lake Isle of Innisfree’, and ‘Under Benbulben’, were inspired by the rugged beauty of these landscapes.

To tread the path Yeats took through Sligo, visit Lissadell House and Gardens, a magnificent neo-classical Greek house built in the early 19th century. Yeats visited the house often as a child and played with the Irish revolutionary fighter Constance Markievicz who lived there. The house overlooks Sligo Bay, sits right at the foot of Benbulben, and is open to the public for tours during the summer months. Check out the Yeats Gallery Exhibition, which was officially opened by Leonard Cohen. Indulge in perfectly baked cakes and sweet, golden pastries at the Lissadell Tea Rooms, before heading out to explore the botanical beauty of the house’s Alpine Gardens. Continue your literary journey to Drumcliffe church, to visit the final resting place of Yeats in the church’s graveyard. Nearby, there is a sixth-century Colombian monastery to seek out or potter around the craft shop on the church grounds for some high-quality Irish souvenirs.

To visit an ancient burial place, head out to Carrowmore Megalithic Cemetery to discover the oldest and densest collection of Neolithic tombs in Ireland. Dating back over 6000 years, the site contains 35 surviving passage tombs. Witness history as you see the stone circles, and tour an exhibition housed in a restored Irish cottage nearby. For more Celtic mysticism, venture ten minutes from Sligo town to the base of Knocknarea. Hike for 6km to reach the summit and see the cairn of the legendary Celtic Queen Medb (pronounced Mave). Pick up a stone at the base and leave it at her resting place on the summit for some Irish luck.  Unwind afterward in Sligo town at one of the many fantastic restaurants and pubs. Take a moment to savor traditional Irish cuisine, known for its hearty flavors, as you mingle with locals and immerse yourself in the vibrant atmosphere.

Discover the allure of County Sligo, where nature, culture, and poetry intertwine to create an unforgettable experience. Let the spirit of Yeats guide you through this captivating land of inspiration and leave you with memories that will linger in your heart long after you depart.
